Cytochrome P450 enzymes are one of the main targets for ROBOX and have now been reported to have applications to make biorenewable chemicals from lignin – a major byproduct of the timber and paper industries.
A new class of CYP450s – the family N were discovered. These can convert guaiacol into catechol (and also the other components of lignin) and this catechol can be converted into muconate which is a platform chemical important in the production of several types of bioplastics. This offers improved properties, sustainability and biodegradability.
